Why I wrote it

I like space and aviation. It is a recurring theme in my work.

This song started with a film I saw where a space mission does not end well, and it picked up something else along the way. I keep coming back to the early years of flight, when people gave their lives proving the thing was possible at all, and to the belief some of them held that this was simply the cost. Sacrifices must be made.

That stayed with me. The idea of doing something because it matters, rather than because it is safe or even likely to work.

Which is why the chorus changes. The first half of the song is “this is our dream.” The second half is “this was our dream.” Same words, past tense. It is not really a song about a only space.

Lyrics

Clear summer night, stars shine so bright
Colorful blinking lights, technological shooting stars
Laying on the ground, pondering around
Animal sounds all around

Put in the effort, got no comfort
It took a lot of lectures and books
Lots of studying around

This is our dream
With ranging fire in our souls
We confront the unknown
We pursue this goal
With all of our heart, we depart
We pioneer despite the fear
This is our dream

Radio inbound, voice counting down
Verify systems, all in check
Heartbeat racing, longing for the launch
Ignition sound, lift-off, shaky ride
Into Max Q's phase, aiming for space

This is our dream
With ranging fire in our souls
We confront the unknown
We pursue this goal
With all of our heart, we depart
We pioneer despite the fear
This is our dream

Thunder sound, red smoke all around
Warning schrill, this is no drill
Rushing to fix the problem
Another thunder and a flash

This was our dream
With ranging fire in our souls
We confronted the unknown
We pursued this goal
With all of our heart, we depart
We pioneered despite the fear
This was our dream

Our dream, and the sacrifice they deem
