Why I wrote it
I like space and aviation. It is a recurring theme in my work.
This song started with a film I saw where a space mission does not end well, and it picked up something else along the way. I keep coming back to the early years of flight, when people gave their lives proving the thing was possible at all, and to the belief some of them held that this was simply the cost. Sacrifices must be made.
That stayed with me. The idea of doing something because it matters, rather than because it is safe or even likely to work.
Which is why the chorus changes. The first half of the song is “this is our dream.” The second half is “this was our dream.” Same words, past tense. It is not really a song about a only space.
